On 30 April 2006 a new District came into being when the County Commissioner (CC) Dick Whittington appointed Thelma Young to be the District Commissioner of the Southampton City District. The new district replaces Southampton Central District and Southampton West District which are being closed. We believe that a single larger district will give us the size and strength to provide the best possible training and fun for the young people of our city at this time.
The CC gave the following message to all members affected by the change. “I am sure that in Thelma we have a DC who will take Southampton City District forward. I ask you all to give her your full support in this role, and to help make Southampton City District one to be proud of.”
The two districts held a joint District Camp “u-Knighting”, with a medieval theme, at which the new District was publicly recognised. The new district is comprised of 11 groups, 4 explorer units, and a full range and variety of district activities.
